From Dream to Reality: the Making of a Fair Trade Learning Scholarship

After many years in the making, the first Fair Trade Learning Scholarship is now a reality! In August 2021, Amizade celebrated an exciting milestone: Nybert Samuels from Petersfield, Jamaica arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport to finally begin attending Slippery Rock University on campus, in person, as the first ever recipient of a Fair Trade Learning Scholarship.
Nybert is completing his degree in communications with a focus on journalism on campus at SRU after taking his first year of courses online from Jamaica. In addition to receiving the Fair Trade Learning Scholarship, Nybert is a Bonner Leader.
Curious to know more? Amizade interviewed Nybert and some of the people who were instrumental in turning the dream of a Fair Trade Learning Scholarship into a reality.
We’re honored to present this inspirational story. Check out the video below:
We hope that this scholarship is the first of many of its kind. Thank you to Slippery Rock University for the hard work and dedication that was necessary to take this huge step towards achieving one of Mr. Brown’s dreams for his community.
If you’re feeling inspired to be a part of that dream, you can! Please donate to the Mathias Brown Memorial Fund. Click here to make your contribution today.
The fund was established to honor Mr. Brown’s legacy and provide access to higher education for students from Petersfield. All donations go directly to the Petersfield Galloway Benevolent Society to provide scholarships and revolving loans.
