College Students: Travel to Jamaica for Spring Break '09
Are you considering traveling abroad for spring break, passionate about volunteer work, or simply looking for a new experience? Amizade has great opportunities for you. This spring, Amizade has two service-learning courses located in Jamaica with academic credits available through West Virginia University.
During the week of March 7-14, Amizade is offering a two-credit course, “Globalization: A Jamaican Case Study.” This course focuses on the sugar and tourism industries in Jamaica and gives you a firsthand look into the effects of globalization on small communities. Class fieldtrips to local sugar plantations, beaches, and commercial centers will further illuminate Jamaica’s unique economic position.
During the week of March 14-22, Amizade is offering a one-credit course, “International Educational Issues.” This course explores the Jamaican educational system and the challenges of economic development through rigorous course work and class discussion. Your course material will be enhanced by tutoring Jamaican students and visiting local community centers.
These courses will give you the opportunity to live in Petersfield with a Jamaican family during your stay, offering a glimpse into Jamaican culture and community life. Returned Amizade students routinely comment on the powerful and touching relationships they make with their host families.
Both courses incorporate community-driven service-learning, academic class work, and the rich culture of the Jamaican people into an unforgettable study abroad experience. Visit Jamaica, meet new people, stretch your worldview. Applicants that are accepted before February 15 will receive a $250 tuition discount. Visit our website for more information.
