Last week the NGO Committee on Social Development affirmed its 2013 Civil Society Declaration at its annual Civil Society Forum. Amizade Board of Directors Chair, Chad Martin, was in attendance in his role as Amizade delegate under our recently granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council).
Amizade is thrilled to announce, in partnership with Cornell University and New York Campus Compact, the 6th Annual Global Service-Learning Institute to take place on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York May 29th – 31st, 2013.
We are thrilled to announce Amizade’s second annual Board Matching Week, this October 1st – 7th. Think for a minute about something you have that you take for granted every day. You probably thought of something like water, food, or shelter. These are all necessary for existence, but what about other things like having the opportunity to receive an education or have a job where your safety is a priority?
Today, March 22, marks the 19th World Water Day and there is a lot to celebrate! In the past, World Water Day has been a time to raise awareness about the millions of people who do not have access to safe drinking water, and while there are 783 million people who still lack access to safe drinking water, we would like to take today to recognize the incredible progress we have made on this issue.
Are you looking for an opportunity to act locally? Do you want to do your part to make a difference globally? Are you an Amizade alumnus that wants to continue to support Amizade’s global endeavors? The perfect opportunity is coming this spring: in April Amizade will hold its 5th Annual Water Walk—in Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 7 and in Morgantown, WV on Saturday, April 21. On August 31, 2011, Amizade will welcome for the first time a delegation of 6 individuals from Santarém. From Amizade’s point of view, the delegation represents a powerful advance in the hope for bilateral exchange. West Virginia University is a central player in the realization of this vision. In May of 2010, Amizade’s site director in Brazil, Nathan Darity, hosted Mike Lastinger, Associate Provost for International Academic Affairs and George Lies, Grants Administrator for the Office of International Programs both of West Virginia University, for a three-day visit composed of meeting with local universities. The visit opened doors to negations about university-level exchange of students and professors. Now, 15 months later, members of the academic community in Santarém are traveling to the US in the hopes of clarifying a mechanism for exchange as well as exploring opportunities for international research and collaboration.
In order to maintain their continued high level of attention to health, safety and security, Amizade employees, site directors, and participants will participate in Amizade Safety Week from June 13th through June 20th. Throughout this week, stakeholders will be retrained on important safety topics, and individuals will be recognized for outstanding safety achievements around the world.
