Service: Service opportunities include assisting a local horse stable, fortifying Sea Island houses, tutoring the youth at a community center, protecting beaches from erosion, and other unique opportunities.
Housing: Students sleep on the recreational vehicle in a secure location for the duration of the program. The faculty member has lodging in a nearby local hotel.
Travel Highlights: Students will spend six days traveling from Pittsburgh, PA to Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA and will have the opportunity to enjoy cultural and recreational activities along the way.

Program Description

You will spend six days traveling in RV motor-homes to Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA volunteering with various organizations.  As you travel you will have the opportunity to learn about local community development while working alongside local citizens. Through the academic component, you will learn about the general history of international development, analyze the role of various international development organizations and initiatives within that broad history, identify and define key international development terms and concepts, and evaluate each of the above in the context of lessons learned in the host communities. Through your experiences in Charleston and Savannah, you will be able to see first hand how community development works. The service and academic exposure will combine to create a forum for reflection on international and domestic development, community-driven service, and global citizenship.
