Program Description
Reform and Revolution: Modern Latin American History connects students with the last half century of development and change in Latin America, while illustrating the connections between those changes and the more distant past as well as life in Latin America today.
Your travel experience will begin in Guanajuato, Mexico, where you’ll have opportunities to view the contemporary evidence of Spanish Colonization and Mexico’s independence movements. You’ll experience an interior Mexican city in the central highlands, and learn from local people regarding their perspectives on life and politics while you continue a broad dialogue on Latin American history with your professor.
After two weeks in Guanajuato you will travel to the Caribbean Coastal Community of Puerto Morelos, where Amizade has worked with volunteers and community organizations for the past several years. In Puerto Morelos, you’ll have opportunities to visit regional Mayan sites and learn about the intersection of mega-tourism with local communities. You’ll also visit the original site for harvesting gum for chicle production, have opportunities to swim in Cenotes, and appreciate the Caribbean Sea. In each location, you’ll have opportunities to support young people’s efforts to improve their English language skills.
