Academic Credits: 1 credit in Service Learning (SRVL 493) through West Virginia University
Academic Instructor: Richard Montgomery, Professor of Philosophy, West Virginia University

Course Description
The course examines international educational issues in communities in less developed countries. Through an integrated one-week intensive academic experience in rural Jamaica, students gain an understanding of the complexity of education and the challenges of development.  We will use critical readings and discussion to help us examine international education, service, and intercultural exchange.

Through home stays and cultural activities, students will have the opportunity to experience rural Jamaican life.  We'll observe in local schools, and visit the beach and other nature sites.  We will work with our partner, the Association of Clubs (AOC), an organization working with Jamaicans to better their communities.  Students complete a 15-hour service project identified by the AOC at one of the local community schools.
