Name: Graham Hubbs

Faculty Biography: Dr. Graham Hubbs spent the 2008-09 academic year as a Visiting Professor in the Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He came to the Parr Center from the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his PhD in Philosophy in the spring of 2008. His dissertation, The Rational Unity of the Self, explores the connection between rationality and self-knowledge. It probes this relation by focusing on the failures of rationality and of self-knowledge that are present in self-deception, and it thus lies at the intersection of ethics, epistemology, and the philosophy of psychology. Dr. Hubbs also holds a BA from Washington University in St. Louis, and he was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy during the 1999-2000 academic year. His most recent academic work has been on the philosophy of action—in the summer of 2009, he, along with Matthew Chrisman, delivered a paper titled “What is Action?” at the Practical Reasoning Workshop hosted by the University of Edinburgh.

While Dr. Hubbs’s writing tends to focus on the rationality and psychology of the individual, he teaches courses in social and political philosophy. In “Morality and Law,” which he taught while visiting the Parr Center, he led students through a study of the social and political writings of Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau, which was then applied to an examination of contemporary Constitutional issues. This course will provide a rough model for the courses Dr. Hubbs will lead in Tanzania. Most of the readings will be philosophical investigations into the nature of justice and cultural identity, and they will provide a framework for understanding and synthesizing the students’ service-learning experiences.

Dr. Hubbs currently lives in Pittsburgh. He loves traveling, even when it takes him away from his garden, which he enjoys tending. He is eagerly awaiting the semester in Tanzania, which he expects to be a life-changing experience for all involved.
