Name: Evan Widders
Instructor Biography: Professor Evan Widders is the director of the Multidisciplinary Studies Program at West Virginia University. He holds a Ph.D. in the History of Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and History from the University of California Berkeley. His research interests center on the instrumental role of science, medicine, and Enlightenment philosophy in the development of a Mexican national identity during the late-colonial period. While researching this topic, Professor Widders waded through archives in Seville, Spain and Mexico City, Mexico. He remains particularly interested in the interplay between the Spanish, Mexican creoles, and indigenous ways of knowing in the cultural melting pot of central Mexico. Evan also taught English to Latin American immigrants in Omaha, Nebraska for two years.
Evan was born and raised in Southern California where he experienced many aspects of Hispanic culture at first hand. He currently lives in Morgantown, WV with his wife Kristie, two children, and their golden retriever. In his spare time he enjoys reading, skiing, and camping.
