Program Description

Community Development in the Caribbean provides students with an academic and practical introduction to the realities of international development efforts, with a specific focus on the experience of rural Jamaica. You’ll meet with and learn from Amizade’s community partner since 2003, the Association of Clubs (AOC). The AOC has been recognized by the Jamaican Government for its excellence in locally-driven rural community development. In the course, you’ll examine critical readings on service, development, and global citizenship that relate directly to your Jamaican experiences. The AOC will identify a community-driven project in which you’ll participate. Past projects have included tutoring local students, helping develop a park, and supporting building and construction efforts. You’ll stay with local families who are part of the AOC network, where you’ll experience a warm introduction to Jamaican life and insightful commentary on local development efforts.
