Brazil > Santarém, Brazil Sample two week Itinerary
Program Itinerary: The following is a sample program itinerary.
Sunday – Volunteers will arrive in Santarém. You will be met at the airport by an Amizade staff member. Since the journey is long, the first afternoon will consist of introductions to some of the staff, giving the volunteers time to get settled in their new rooms, having something to eat, and possibly a brief driving tour of Santarém.
Monday – Everyday, we will go to the Pastoral do Menor, a program for street kids. We will have breakfast Monday through Friday between 7:00 am and 7:45 am. We will leave for the Pastoral at 8:00 am and return at 11:00 am. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday between 11:30 and 12:15 with siesta until 1:30 or 2:00. We will work at the Pastoral from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Dinner is served at approximately 5:30 pm depending on the activities of the day.
Tuesday – Prior to going to the Pastoral, we will take a tour of the Fundação Esperança, a health and education organization. We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor.
Wednesday – We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. Later in the afternoon, we will go for a hike in a local forest preserve. We can't promise seeing wildlife but you never know what you will see at the Bosque Lucia.
Thursday - We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. An evening activity will be scheduled based on the group’s interests.
Friday – We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. We will go into town to hear local music in the evening.
Saturday – We will go to the open air market in the morning. This is a great opportunity to see the exotic fish, fruits, and vegetables which are indigenous to the area. The rest of the day will be open for volunteers to rest or to tour Santarém.
Sunday - We will take a boat trip to Maica, a tributary along the Amazon. We will look at wildlife and go to the Meeting of the Waters.
Monday – We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. Later in the afternoon, we will take a tour of the coffee factory.
Tuesday – We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. In the evening we will go out for ice cream.
Wednesday –We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. In the evening we will have a speaker talk about the history of the Amazon.
Thursday – We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. We will have free time in the evening to rest and relax.
Friday – We will spend the day volunteering at the Pastoral do Menor. In the evening, we will go to a Churrascaria for dinner.
Saturday – We will meet with a dozen or so kids from the Pastoral who volunteered with us and go to Alter do Chão. The Alter do Chão is a quaint little beach town 30 miles outside of Santarém. In the evening, we will have a celebration dinner.
Sunday – Farewell Day – In the morning, we will have time to do any last minute packing before traveling to the airport.
