Dear Michael,

When isn't the time right to visit a new part of the world, serve alongside community members, form lasting friendships, and better understand yourself and the world around you?

The time is right. The world is waiting. The choice is yours.

  • Service and Spanish: Long-term Opportunities in Bolivia
    .
After several years of sustained partnerships in Cochabamba and Vinto, Amizade is offering long-term volunteer opportunities in Bolivia beginning June 1. The first long-term volunteers are arriving in Bolivia a few days early, at the end of this month. Their placements include home-stay and intensive language training options and are tailored to the interests, needs, and capabilities of each volunteer.

Service during the long-term experience is arranged with one of four community organizations: Ceoli, Milenium, Buen Pastor or Cooperazionne Internacionale. Individuals may develop and exercise skills in: providing healthcare to children with disabilities; assisting with the efforts and maintenance of a nursing home; providing health and mental care for orphans; and developing agricultural, health, and irrigation programs in rural Bolivia.

The program offers all of Amizade's essential components of authentic service opportunities, intercultural interaction, and educational and recreational experiences. In addition to academically recognized language training, one of the program's most exciting components is the opportunity for home-stays, which further enhance the volunteer's cultural immersion.

Volunteers will stay with a Bolivian family for the duration of their experience. Most home-stays include a private bedroom and all ensure two meals a day, a shelf in the refrigerator, and a shared bathroom with a family of no larger than four; an exciting opportunity for both the Bolivians and the Americans.

Unbelievably Affordable: Travel Writing in Ghana
    .
Fly to Africa, live there for over three weeks, work with community members, and earn six English credits while honing your travel writing skills: all for $3,000. Airfare, food, lodging, cultural and recreational activities, and a donation to the community are all included in the course fee.

Service will be coordinated through the Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU), an organization that encourages intercultural understanding through a variety of community-oriented service efforts. From drumming to dancing and African singing, students will experience true Ghanian culture.

Ghana supports a tremendously diverse natural habitat, including a rainforest with Africa's only canopy walkway and a variety of beaches. For the intercultural experience, for the academic experience, to experience a beautiful part of Africa and peer across an open Savannah - this course is an unparalleled opportunity!

Art History - Political Murals - Service in Northern Ireland
    .
Despite Vincent van Gogh's revelation, "... the more I think, the more I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people," art is at times instrumental in reinforcing a sense of difference. Nonetheless, art can act as a powerful force to bring people together, create community and re-enforce a commonly held appreciation for inspired creativity.

The intersection of art and community will be examined in "Art History in Northern Ireland: Mural Painting and Social Change in the 20th Century." In addition to analyzing murals in Pittsburgh and Belfast, students will serve with Corrymeela, a peace and reconciliation organization that Pitt students also served with during Spring Break.

Throughout the course, students will compile individual photo-journals and journal entries. Pittsburgh class meetings begin July 21, with cultural immersion in Northern Ireland taking place from August 4 to August 21, and a final week of classes upon return.

    Upcoming Volunteer Programs
Volunteering with Amizade this summer is still an option! A variety of domestic and international volunteer programs are still open. Spend one week of your summer preserving history by restoring one of the world's first Dude Ranches in Montana. Or travel to South America - Bolivia, Brazil or Both - to help build an orphanage for Quechua children or a community facility for street children.

Looking for something with more altitude? Then wait and volunteer in the fall in Nepal. Amizade is also continuing Bolivia and Brazil programming throughout the autumn.

Amizade continues to expand and develop. During the second half of 2003, Amizade volunteers and students will serve on every habitable continent.

Future Amizade volunteers can choose from any of the many programs listed under "2003 Program Dates and Fees" available on the right side of the page that appears through the link below.
